If I were a teacher, and the assignment was to respond to a question with a 200-300 word answer, I would quite happily take points off for all the students who answered with 400-500 word answers. Seriously, why do people do this? It drives me nuts! |

I just checked out the five page preview for the new Willow one-shot that's coming out. I think... I think it made me like Kennedy just a little bit.
...Excuse me, I just threw up a little bit when I typed that last part.
EDIT: God, now I don't know whether or not to buy it. I very much prefer to wait until the trade paperback comes out, instead of buying individual issues. But this is a one-shot. What if they don't include it in the next Buffy TPB! What would I do!? I would be forced to scour E-Bay and then I would probably only be able to get a copy with the non-Jo Chen cover!! Life would clearly be over!!

That's right gentle viewers, f-list. Mama's getting herself a brand new toy. A beautiful, new laptop powerful enough to laugh at any game you might throw at it. First priority, revisiting World of Warcraft. Oh, WoW, how I've missed you.

| Masquerade! Paper Faces On Parade |
[Nov. 25th, 2009|06:01 pm] |
Okay, one of the super awesome things about my trip to Venice was the masks. I like to collect masks, and since Carnivale is a big deal in Venice, practically every street corner has a shop that sells masks. These are the two I picked up while I was there. They're not at all pretty and that's part of the reason I like them.

| Italy |
[Nov. 22nd, 2009|08:39 pm] |
Back from Italy! Overall, the trip definitely had its ups and downs. The logistics class I went to take should probably be retitled to acquisitions or aircraft maintenance. And some of the company was a little wanting. But hey! The government just paid me to go stay in Italy for a week, just an hour's train ride from Venice, so maybe I should just shut the hell up.
( Pictures behind the cut! )
Italy aside, I got quite a bit done today: this week's homework; two loads of laundry; wrote the first couple pages of chapter five of The Master of Sunnydale; finished up buying decorations for my first Christmas tree; drew up a grocery list for tomorrow. All that, plus I got to watch a movie, Stardust. I would like to point out that Stardust was a pleasant surprise. It was rather hilarious.
Now, to start typing up chapter four of MoS! |

| Buongiorno! |
[Nov. 15th, 2009|10:49 am] |
Dear friends,
I am currently in Italy, taking a logistics class for my job. I will be here until the end of the coming week. If I fail to reply to you in a timely manner it is because A) I'm in class; B) I have limited internet access; C) I'm doing homework for my online classes; D) I'm out sightseeing in Italy (yay!) or E) I'm attempting to do get all my Christmas shopping done, too.
In the meantime, I promise to eat lots of pasta, pizza, and gelatto for you all. No matter how much it pains me ;) Also, thank you to everyone who sent out birthday wishes!!
Now, if only Starbucks would make their Christmas Blend available online. *Gnashes teeth* |

To my Sister Service and everyone serving at Fort Hood - be they soldiers, airmen, or family members - my thoughts are with you. An event like this completely destroys the sense of security and community that those in our profession have to depend on. And there's no doubt that those soldiers who were about to deploy are no longer in the right mindset to do so. But as unfathomable as it may seem right now, life will slowly return to normal, and this isolated, tragic incident will become a thing of the past. |

I have been trying to read Zadie Smith's On Beauty. I say 'trying' because it's not exactly a page turner or all that interesting at all. But I kept trying to stick with it. When it came out in 2005, it received a good portion of critical acclaim, going up for the Booker award. Plus, since leaving VCU, most of the books I read for pleasure nowadays are either Sci-fi/Fantasy or YA fiction with a supernatural spin to it. I haven't been reading anything by contemporary authors that doesn't fit into those categories. In addition, the book tackles issues such as mixed marriages, which is interesting because I'm pretty sure I haven't read a whole lot of books that deal with interracial couples.
So for all of those reasons, I trudged on. And then I went to Amazon and read a couple reviews for the book and someone mentioned this, "I'm not sure that this book would be great even with better editing and dialogue. I think we've gotten to the point in literature where we pat an author on the back for even bothering with the "big questions."
What a revelation! That is pretty much exactly what I've been doing. Does just dealing with 'big issues' make a book good? Worthwhile? Is that why it got so many positive reviews from lit bloggers? Well, I don't think it does. And now that I've been able to pinpoint my exact feelings, I feel much better about putting this book back on the shelf and moving on to something more worthy of my precious spare moments. |

Whew. Just got back from the airlift/tanker conference in Nashville. Nine hour plane rides always leave me feeling like a zombie.
F-list, I'm not entirely sure when I'll get around to catching up, particularly on everyone's seasonal_spuffy posts. But I'll try to do it before my trip to Italy in a week or so. |

| Dean Winchester: Made of Awesome. |
[Oct. 26th, 2009|07:50 pm] |
I'm currently working my way through Season 4 of Supernatural. I just got done watching "After School Special." Words cannot express how incredibly awesome the scene with Dean pretending to be a gym teacher was. I mean. The gym outfit. Pegging that poor kid with the ball. "The whistle makes me their god." I could sit there and re-watch that scene ten times straight and it still wouldn't get old. |

Meme time! Stolen from avadriel
1. Bold the names of guys you'd definitely shag. 2. Italicize the names of guys you might shag after a little persuasion. 3. Leave the guys who don't do anything for you alone. 4. Put a question mark after the guys you've never heard of. 5. Strike the guys you wouldn't touch with a ten-foot pole. 6. ADD FOUR OF YOUR OWN AT THE END.
NOTE THAT THESE ARE THE FICTIONAL CHARACTERS, NOT THE ACTORS THEMSELVES...

I just found myself absolutely riveted by an essay on battlefield tactics (the blitzkrieg specifically). Either hell is freezing over or there's hope for me yet. One of the two, I'm not sure which. |

| Writing; it's a process. Sometimes. |

When it comes to the writing process, it seems as though the majority of you (f-list, writers of the world, etc.) put so much more thought into exactly where a story is going and how it's going to get there, than I do. When I write, I often have only the vaguest notion of kinda sorta where it might go. And then I just put pen to paper and see how it all pours out. In addition to that, I tend to (at least, in fanfic land) write a chapter and immediately post it. Thereby tying my hands in the future when I think of some nifty plot device but then realize that crap, I should've built that in from the beginning and it's too late now.
Most of the time, I would say this method works out great for me. Thus far I have been very pleased with my longer works like Centering, Old Growth, what I've done for The Master of Sunnydale so far, and even The Cost of Redemption, even though re-reading parts of it make me cringe just a little bit inside and wish for a bottle of something very, very strong.
But sometimes it doesn't really work all that well, and I end up with several pages of something that will never ever see the light of day.
I have on occasion thought to myself that maybe I really should try out this idea of planning out my storylines a little bit better. But part of me also thinks that that is exactly why I have failed to write a piece of original fiction longer than fifteen pages since I left high school.
Meh. Alright, time to type up my seasonal_spuffy submission. I suppose since I have to submit it tomorrow, it shall remain unbetaed. Bad me!
Edit: Wait! Apparently my submission date isn't tomorrow, but Thursday. Good. |

Sciarid flies have infested my succulent! Boo! As of right now, I have banished my poor little plant to the garden shed. Hopefully the cold will not do a whole lot of damage until I can arm myself with the proper means of ridding it of these pests.
Also... I have not done nearly as much homework as I should have today. But I did bid on a collection of Tamora Pierce's Song of the Lioness and The Immortals series in hardback! So clearly, I did something right today. :D |
